Packaging technology

In cooperation with the Packaging Testing Laboratory our students can study and develop specific, innovative wrapping and padding materials. The equipment of the Laboratory enables tests of dangerous goods' packaging, various transport packaging tests (conditioning and testing atmospheres, downhill track, collide, drop, shock, vibration, compression), quality tests of packaging materials and automotive industrial testing.

Development of passive cooling box packaging

The aim of this research is to investigate the cold supply chain (e.g. pharmaceuticals) in aspect of packaging technologies. In some cases the active cooling solutions are not economical during the transportation, so we started to investigate passive cooling boxes. We are mapping the influence of the outer/inner environment on the content, e.g.

      • number of the ice batteries
      • the outside temperature
      • design of the packaging
      • number of openings etc.

ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection of a new environmental packaging foam

We investigate the Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of a new environmental packaging foam (Thermoplastic starch biodegradable foam) to use it for international transportation. The use of traditional foam packaging has wider biological footprint and the sustainable development is really important for producers and consumers. So thet we need to examine TPS being a proper material to substitute previous materials and also able to protect the contents of ESD.

Relationship between ECT-strength and basis weight of corrugated board

There is relationship between the ECT-strength (Edge Crush Test) and basis weight of corrugated board, that if the basis weight is higher the ECT increases but from a certain point enlarge of the weight will cause lower ECT. Our research aims to find the optimal rate of basis weight and edge strength.
